چکیده
After studying this chapter you should be able to: b Define the normal range for plasma pH. c Explain the role of the kidney in the steady state elimination of acid produced daily by metabolism. d Outline the defence mechanisms which act to prevent an abrupt change in pH in response to an acid load. e Describe the mechanism for acid transport in the different nephron segments. f Recognize the clinical and biochemical features of metabolic acidosis, list some causes and give an approach to the differential diagnosis. g Recognize metabolic alkalosis, list some causes, and explain the pathophysiology of this disturbance during prolonged vomiting.

متن کاملEffects of hypercapnia on acid–base balance and osmo-/iono-regulation in prawns (Decapoda: Palaemonidae)
Anthropogenic carbon dioxide-induced ‘ocean acidification’ is predicted to have major implications for marine organisms. As the oceans becomes increasingly hypercapnic (elevated CO2) and seawater pH decreases, the ability of organisms to maintain extracellular pH homeostasis (acid– base balance) may be compromised. Acid–base regulation occurs by ionic transport, where hydrogen and bicarbonate i...

The acid-base balance of cerebrospinal fluid (c.s.f.) has been studied extensively during the last 25 years, especially in connection with the respiratory physiology and the central regulation of ventilation. Great attention has also been paid to the significance of hydrogen ion homeostasis in c.s.f, and to the mechanisms involved in the maintenance of a constant c.s.f. pH in various conditions...
متن کاملAcid-base balance and CO2 excretion in fish: unanswered questions and emerging models.
Carbon dioxide (CO(2)) excretion and acid-base regulation in fish are linked, as in other animals, though the reversible reactions of CO(2) and the acid-base equivalents H(+) and HCO(3)(-): CO(2)+H(2)O<-->H(+)+HCO(3)(-). These relationships offer two potential routes through which acid-base disturbances may be regulated. Respiratory compensation involves manipulation of ventilation so as to ret...
متن کاملPreferential intracellular pH regulation: hypotheses and perspectives.
The regulation of vertebrate acid-base balance during acute episodes of elevated internal PCO2 is typically characterized by extracellular pH (pHe) regulation. Changes in pHe are associated with qualitatively similar changes in intracellular tissue pH (pHi) as the two are typically coupled, referred to as 'coupled pH regulation'. However, not all vertebrates rely on coupled pH regulation; inst...
